What are you searching?

As a society we are somewhat obsessed with searching the internet for information about any topic under the sun.  Personally as soon as I am questioning something I turn to Google or Yahoo for the answer.  Things such as song lyrics, mathematical conversions, weather, the relationship status of a celeb, etc.  The options are endless.  What are three things you regularly search on the internet? Read the following articles from 2012.  How many of the Top 10 have you searched over the past few years?  Which of the Top 10 interests you the most and why?  Which is the least likely for you to search?  What is one thing your regularly search? How do you think our instant searching habits are changing society?  Do you think the constant and virtually instant access to information allowed by technology is a good or bad thing? Why?

  1. Over the past few years the only top search that I have personally searched would be Gangnam Style. However, Jeremy Lin really interests me as an athlete. I just think he has a great story. Whitney Houston is definitely the least likely to be searched by me. I regularly search things that would bring up hunting or fishing articles. I think people are able to learn new things a lot quicker, and a lot more efficiently. I think that it is a great thing! People can find things, when they need them, just with the click of a button.

    1. I agree, the whole Jeremy Lin story is great story.

  2. It seems the majority of online searches are of people. As for myself, I couldn't care less about a famous person, much less spend my time to look them up on the web. However, I can relate to searching up information about the election and poll results. The majority of my web searches are for factual information such as a technical question or just a curiosity about our world. Often I will also find myself looking for song lyrics or music videos. In my opinion, the habits we have gained from instant searching overall are good. It may pose problems from time to time with the previous generation and their "old ways", however I believe it is a "step up" for society to have more information available to them when they need it. Then with all the information that is available, someones excuse for their lack of knowledge would be invalid.

  3. I have noticed that one of the most common phrases in this day and age is "Google it." Everyone seems to go to the internet for all of their answers. The only time I really use google is if I need help with homework or if I heard one of my friends talk about a subject that is foreign to me. I think that using the internet like that can be very useful, however the information that you find isn't always completely reliable. If I research something I check a few different sources to make sure that I'm obtaining the correct info. In the top 10 the only search that I made was Gangnam Style. It's intriguing to see what the nation and the rest of the world are searching on the internet. We should be fortunate because we have all of the information we could ever need at our fingertips.

  4. The three things I regularly search on the internet are clothes, sports scores, and news from my local TV station's website.
From reading the follow articles, I would say the topics I have searched from the top 10 is the 2012 Election, 2012 Olympics, and Jeremy Lin.
The one that interests me the most is the 2012 Olympics because since I'm a big sports fan I love watching and keeping up-to-date with all of the different athletes participating in all of the different events.
The topic I am least likely to search would have to be Gangnam Style. Yes, it is a very big hit but I am not too interested in reading all about it.
One thing I do regularly search is clothes or shoes. I like to see what new design is out there and hope that I can get it.
I think our instant searching habits are changing society because we want to answers right away if we don't have them ourselves. Also there are way more topics to search about now then there was 15 years ago.
I think the constant and virtually instant access that we have to get information off the internet is good because there can be resourceful sites that can help out with everyday needs or needing research for a school project. It can be a bad thing because it can become a distraction to getting other important this accomplished.

  5. Three things I search regularly on the internet would be directions to places, song lyrics, and artists who made the songs. Out of the top 10 I think I search maybe only three of them. Three of the top 10 that I found interesting was the Ipad 3, Olympics 2012, and the presidential election of 2012. These three interest me the most because I followed the Olymics and elections of 2012. The thing I would least likely search is probably any celebrity. By being able to search anything instantly, it is changing society by making everything a lot easier. Also, false information could be given out at any time. I also think having instant access to information is a good thing because if you ever need to know anything it's just right there for you to search. There really isn't any hassle when it comes to finding what you want to know.

    1. I like that I am not the only one who doesn't often research any celebrity. I find other things much more interesting as well.

  6. The top three things I regularly search on the internet would have to be song lyrics, sports scores or local news from my hometown. Out of the "Top 10" for 2012, I looked up Michael Clarke Duncan. Other than that, I could either care less or was already informed to the point I didn't need to make a google search. From the top 10, Michael Clarke Duncan interests me the most. An urban legend is that if you weren't aware of his passing, he would put some type of evil on you, Ricky Bobby. The least likely thing for me to search would have to be any of the girls outside of Whitney Houston on that list. I can't care about born rich, talentless people. It's just not in me. The thing I search the most would be song lyrics because I usually can't actually make out all the words without reading them. I think our instant searching habbits are keeping people very up tp date on the latest trends, fads and politcal movements. This allows for a much more synchronized society and, with the help of major news and persuasive writing, a large group of people with damn near the same opinion. I think being able to search up anything at the click of a button is just helping the newest form of conformity. I'm sure these searches are used for good on occassion, but a lot of searches could easily go without being done. I personally don't believe in good or bad because what is good for one person is terrible for another. There are positives and negatives to these searches. That being said, I wish more of the celebrity idols we worshipped did something besides being born with money.

  7. Looking at the Top 10 searched items, I am guilty to say that I searched those topics quite frequently. However, the order is much more different than that of the national one. The top searched item I had on that list has Gangnam Style...there was just something about that beat that got to me, I just could not stop listening and dancing to it! The next searched topic I would have to say would be the Hunger Games, because I am really interested in the production of the movie and how it will relate to the story line of the books. Also, I kept up regularly with the 2012 Olympics via the internet.
The topics that least interest me was Whitney Houston's death, do not get me wrong, I thought she was a great singer and idol, it is just that that topic did not interest me all that much. I am going to be brutally honest...one thing that I regularly search is Justin Bieber! I can't help it...I just think he is so cute! Oh and a good singer.
I think that the ability to instantly search items is allowing more people to consistently learn something, whether its about a celebrity or scientific topic, society is still gaining some sort of knowledge quickly. I also do not think that having constant ability to search the internet is a not a bad thing. I just view it was a way to get quick answers to random questions that might pop through our mind throughout the day.

    1. I agree that it is not a bad thing as well. I hold several of the same opinions as you dealing with the idea that it is becoming a quicker way for people to receive anwsers to their questions.

  8. Looking at the top ten searches I can deffinitely say that I have researched several of those topics, mainly the 2012 Olympics. When that time of the year roles around I become very excited especially the gymnastics. Suprisingly, the least likely thing i search is probably the ipad 3. My dad and younger brother are very technology friendly, so I never worry too much about doing research. I just go to them with any questions I may have. The main search I frequently conduct would have to be Miss America updates being that I hold a strong involvment within the pageant industry. There is always something new about each state winner and what they do through out their year reign, which I enjoy keeping up with. Changes are made daily with how people are changing the way they search. Overall, I think that the ability to search almost anything is an asset to our society but then again allows people to become more lazy and not have to do much on their own.

  9. When it comes to googling things, my selection is very broad. I mostly just search things like random health facts, lyrics to a song, or random facts. Occasionally ill google something random but only if I thinks it’s interesting and I want to know more about it. To be honest when I see the most googled things in America and all around the world I was kind of disappointed. I think I can honestly say I've never googled any of the top ten. Why? I don’t know probably either because I knew about it or I thought it was pointless. Out of what I saw I would say what interested me most was probably Whitney Huston. Not that I don’t know who she is or what she has done in her life, but just that fat that so many people googled her. It made me wonder why? I mean if she wouldn't have died would she have been googled at all? I would say probably not. What I would least likely search is gangnam style or whatever! That song, that dance, I see it EVERYWHERE. I don’t even have to google it, and listening to it really never gave me pleasure.

What I search more regularly would probably be random facts. Like, if I’m bored ill google some inserting things that I learn from or say wow I didn't know that. Those are the things I like to google. I mean I would say googling has changed society. It cuts of dependence of people. You can just google the answer instead of risky getting a false one from another, but in an all for yourself society I think it works out to people benefit. As for if it’s a good or bad thing I would say it goes both ways. Having instant knowledge of something I would say is very beneficial for a society. People can constantly learn something new and become more intelligent. Like all things it can go both ways though. The internet and having such free access means anyone can also access not so good things. Like children they can search into very adult things and are doing so. The fact that it has such lack of security towards children is something I can see as being a problem.

  10. My number one top google search would have to be directions/addressees. My second google search would probably be the Green Bay Packers, I always need to know whats going on with my team. My third top google search would probably have to be just random questions about my health. Quite honestly I'm pretty sure I've only googled two of the top ten searches. One being Jeremy Lin, I remember hearing about him on ESPN and immediately needed to know where this guy came from. The second being that Kony 2012 whole ordeal. First i saw it on twitter and then I actually watched the whole thing on youtube and then literally within days it just disappeared and everyone didn't care anymore.

The least likely thing that I would search is a hard one because obviously I've never thought about it, probably a lot of the celeb stuff that a lot of people follow. I find little to none interest in the celebrities life's. My most regular search would have to be as i stated earlier updates on the Green Bay Packers. Absolutely it is changing our society. Instead of asking people for directions i just google it. Instead of asking someone where is the nearest coffee shop, I can just google it. I think all this instant access to searching is a good thing because it allows us as a whole to be faster and even more reliable.
