My topic was the technology advancements in hockey helmets. The strides that companys have made to make these hockey helmets safer and more concussion proof is quite remarkable. To think less than 35 years ago players and referees were not even wearing helmets blows me away. The numbers are dropping, the stats are there with these helmets, guys/girls are getting less concussions. The impact on our society with this new technology helps kids and most of all parents feel more safe letting there kids play hockey.

ReplyDeleteI looked into technology advances in the automotive industry. My first article was about car theft going down dramatically in the Twiin Cities as more technologically advanced keys became a standard. According to the article theft has gone down almost 50% since 2005. My second artlice was on a small group of innovators in rural Tennesee who are recieving large investments to make "Jetsons" like technology possible for cars. They have already developed computer image software that a car's computer can read and help prevent crashes and such. My final article was on a "smart highway" in Holland. This highway would charge electric cars as they drive, illuminate itself in the dark for better visibilty and have special paint to show when icy. This would be an incredible advancement.

Smartphones:
ReplyDeleteAfter reading these articles, smartphones have such an impact on technology and our society. The first article talks about what age kids should be able to received their first smartphone. The pros of it were they could be exposed to our techno world and be easily prepared for every new technology that comes out. The cons is that they would learn to be non-social and learn to not have a face to face conversation.
The second article talked about how good smartphones are to society. One being the increase in social networking with helps us stay in contact with each other. Two, it has helped people become better readers instead of relying on the old fashioned books and magazines. And three is, smartphones are helping us become more capable of doing more things everyday. We are able to book airline tickets or have the phone remind us of things that need to get done.
The third article deals with how students were able to bring their smartphones, tablets, etc. to a summer camp. On the first day the man in charge took every bit of technology the kids had and kept it for a week. When he returned it a week later, students ran every where to find plug-ins and check all of their social networking sites, send text messages, or call their best friend. They all said they felt lost and didn't know where they were during the time they were without their smartphones. This shows that this generation is so dependent on their phones and that they can't function without it.
To summarize all of the articles, smartphones are essential for everyday life. People need them to stay in contact with people, know their work schedule, and have reminders of what needs to be done for the day. Smartphones are nice to have because coming from my stand point, since I'm at college and only two and half hours away from home, it's easier to stay in contact with my family and be kept up-to-date on what's going on.

Hacking

Hacking is becoming much easier in todays society with the heavy increase in technology. Most people think of hacking with computers. The term phishing is used alot with hackers. One example is when money is trying to be stolen. Hackers could do the simplest thing which causes a browser to redirect all bank URLs to a set of phony sites that looked just like their legitimate counterparts. After that a number appears to call for assistance. With only a few simple questions someones account could be wiped cleaned instantly. On the other hand, with the advances in technology some people do not even realize some of the things that can be hacked. Baby monitors is one instance. In the article I read from CNN News Report on August 18, it explained how a family in Las Vegas, Nevada had a hacker come through their baby monitor telling the little girl to wake up, even knowing her name from it being on the wall in her room.
With the advancements, security has become a huge issue. It becomes easier by the day for people to be hacked in all shapes and forms. Society has become much more aware of these problems, making everyone more alert and taking more precautions from day to day.

ReplyDeleteOLED has came out with a new technology design that allows users to bend their phone. The screen display can be put on a material like foil or a thin metal, and the bending of the screen will not harm the display. Samsung has already said that they will most likely make a model using this technology. However, this isn't just for phones. There are already 55" televisions being shipped in that have the technological capability of bending.
Samsung just recently revealed their "SmartWatch." It offers things such as photos, hands-free calls, and instant messaging. Battery life has improved to over 27 hours due to testing done in the Samsung lab. This company is coming out with multiple new products. There is no release date, however it is most likely to hit the market in Q4 with all of their OLED products.
Ishin-Denshin is a Japanese prototype of a microphone that allows you to whisper with your fingertips. The user whispers a message into the microphone, which processes what is said and turns it into a signal that modulates an electrostatic field around their body. The user can then touch someone's ear and that will cause a vibration that is translated into what was said into the microphone.
With these new designs and inventions, the interaction between people in our society may change drastically. We are not used to seeing phones being folded in half or people sending messages from their watch. Also, how weird would it be to see people talking to each other by touching their fingers to their ears. Technology is advancing and with that, society is changing.

Technology is changing healthcare very rapidly, and in many different ways. The newest big technological advance in health care right now is using a cloud system to store information. The cancer institution has a book much too big to be stored anywhere else, so they are trying to store it on a cloud. It will be much easier for other doctors to get their hands on the information as well, so it speeds that part of the process up as well.
ReplyDeleteTechnology is affecting health care and society in small ways too. There are more, and more healthy diet apps coming out all of the time. Also, did you ever hear of Watson? The IBM super computer beat out two people to win a game of jeopardy, along with 1,000,000 that was donated to a medical charity. They could use him to keep patient history and stay up to date on research.
Doximity is a new social networking website, however, it is just for doctors. It's a way for doctors to stay in touch, ask questions, and learn from each other.

Online Marketing
ReplyDeleteBefore public online access, businesses would use an assortment of ways to market their product or establishment. Now with a large percent of our society keeping their noses to their smartphones it’s no wonder that online marketing is a growing occurrence. While ads are still common in your newspaper, chances are you see a whole lot more ads just going to your favorite social media site. Ads are everywhere online and as our technology advances so will the online marketing industry. Online marketing is also a great way to advertise to a targeted market by picking and choosing just where to host an ad. Online marketing is a huge industry, raking in at 40 billion in only 2008.

The topic that I chose and focused on was Google, which is funny because I used the search engine to find information about the impacts Google has on our society today. I think me using the search engines shows how much we rely on Google to find answers. I think that the invention of Google forever changed how we go about finding information. We used to just go out and find the answers or just ask a friend, but now we have all the answers usually in the palm of our hands via the iPhone. Google allows for quick answers, which is what this time period strives for.
ReplyDeleteNot only that, but Google has much more to provide: Google Maps, which allows you to view around the world in a matter of seconds! Google also provides a GPS that can give fast directions to where ever you want to go. They created a robot car that can drive itsel with cameras and radar sensors! That is only something I thought would be in Sy-fy movies. There is much more to what google has to offer and from there it is only expanding and growing. I can see Google being even more engraved into our lives then it already is now.

ReplyDeleteI looked up mind controlling technology. Thinking I would find one of those planes that you can fly around with your brain waves. Instead I found something almost unbelievable, but it was so well put together that it was almost as equally believable. This article talks about how people can hack into any computer, and track you from anywhere you are in the United States just by using the electrical currents in your body. Because of this electrical current we can create a magnetic field around us. These people apart of this organization have advanced technology that can analyze anything from computer to organic as long as it has an electric current. If this technology truly exist then why is it so hidden, and why don’t people know about such advanced technology.

This one will amaze you!! When I even thought of the idea I got very excited to see if this was actually in the near future. Which it is. Only in five years you can stay in a space hotel orbiting the earth, if you have an extra 1 million dollars that is. Built by a Russian company called Orbital Technologies. You’ll travel at 17,500 miles an hour up into space in a low orbit. They have gourmet food, and many more pleasures for you once you get there.

What the number one thing people think about when they saw into the future? Well flying cars of course. Think about it was going to be the next big thing and everyone would have them once we grew up! This so to seemed fantasy is actually closer to reality then you think. Flying cars exist just not to the public yet. Think about that FLYING CARS EXIST! How crazy is that. Carl Dietrich the designer of these flying cars is shocked that they haven’t been used casually yet. They say they are just in the concept stage but expect progress to increase rapidly.
Global warming is a rapidly growing concern. Whether you believe it or not some current trends are suggesting that the signs are far worse than expected. With 40% of Arctic sea ice cover melted withing the last 30 years, it is suggested that within the next few decades that Arctic sea will be completely ice free in the summers.
ReplyDeleteSeptember marks the end of the Antarctica winter, and to the surprise, Antarctica ice levels reached a record high of 7.53 million square miles. To some this may support opposition of global warming, however, Antarctica's ice is more complex. And depends mainly on wind to spread ice about, thus increasing surface area. Scientist say it was just simply favorable weather patterns that accounted for the ice surge, and that global warming should not be dismissed.
According to the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, the scientist community may have been under-ruling the role of the current climate change situation. By limiting their testing, may new contributing effects of global warming have been recently discovered and are nearly doubling the current "known" threat. As the oceans absorb CO2 and excess heat due to global warming, known as Carbon Sinks, they could reach a saturation point where their ability to absorb is continually reduced, in turn allowing global warming to accelerate - eventually, the oceans themselves could become an increasing source of CO2 if this process continues.
