The last post!

Well I want to thank you all for your awesome work this semester, you have been a great class!

Today is our last day of class and we are going to do a short recap of the semester.  I want everyone to pick one topic or article we discussed in this class then gather information to give the class a 2 minute current update on the topic.  Post the information and summary to this blog.

Please remember hand in your papers by Wednesday, December 18th at 11AM.  If I am not in my office just slide them under my door!

Have a great Christmas holiday!

  2. My favorite topic this semester has been Toronto mayor Dale Ford, aka "Big Crack Daddy". The Crack Daddy is once again saying ridiculous things to the media and basically embarrassing his city for everyone to see. He accused a Toronto Star reporter of being a pedophile and taking pictures of his family and kids from across his backyard fence. Courts viewed security tapes of the backyard and concluded that the reporter, Daniel Dale, didn't actually peek over the fence. Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly says Ford should apologize.

PS- This is actually happening... Wow, why was this guy elected?

  3. Ill be talking a little about the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. I enjoyed the article on the free Olympic tickets that were given out by doing squats in front of that machine.

  4. The article I am recapping is the Sunken Treasure. It was about the cruise ship that sunk of the island coast of Giglio, Italy. The vessel sunk in January 2012, and from articles from September 2013, engineers working to upright the ship ran into a few problems. A few problems they ran into were severe thunderstorms causing a delay in work time. Also, the cables that were pulling to upright the ship started giving slack. But with the problems they had, engineers were able to hoist the ship of the sea floor and get it onto the platform in it's upright, original position.

Many bodies of passengers and crew members are still missing. Once the ship gets buoyance, many people working on this project believe they will start to find remains of the 32 that are still missing.Submarines equipped with surveillance cameras will be used to assess the damaged side of the ship.

  5. The topic I have chosen to update on is the Costa Concordia, the cruise liner that crashed causing the boat to tip onto its side, which was caused by the captain of the ship Francesco Schettino.

In January 2012, the Costa Concordia was on route to its destination when captain, Francesco Schettino, went off course crashing the boat and causing a major accident. This crash caused 32 deaths of the 4,200 that were on the boat. On Monday, in Grosetto, Italy, Francesco's court hearing continued where he gave his testimony. Gregorio Di Falco of the Livorno Port Authority, had told Francesco to get back onto the ship after he crashed it and jump onto a life boat. Gregorio had said he then took immediate action in helping as many passengers as he could. He also stated that all the information the captain had gave was inconsistent, because after the crash he thought there were only a dozen people left on the ship when there really was between 200-300 people still on board. Francesco faces charges of manslaughter, causing a maritime disaster and abandoning ship with passengers still on board. Even though he is being charged with this he still denies that he did this.

  6. I am going to give a current update to the "What are you searching?" topic. In class, we discussed the top 10 searched items of the year and what they were at the time two months ago. Google Trends is a site on Google that allows people to see the top 10 searched items for that current day. Todays top 10 included things like Mega Millions, VS fashion show, Mack Brown, and multiple different particular VS models.

It's neat to see the change in trend as the months go by. Whatever is happening on the television always happens to be the top trends. Technology plays such a huge role in our lives today. We see something on the TV and if we aren't informed on the topic, we instantly pull out our phones and type it into Google.

  7. There was so many interesting topics and articles to choose from that I had a hard time deciding what one I wanted to do. As I tried to single out what one to do< I finally came to a conclusion that I wanted to give the class a current update on the mayor of Toronto, Robert Ford. We all know that he was accused and brought out in the media to have smoked cracked and even have crazy outburst. He even got some of his mayoral powers taken away. But after these articles I haven't heard much about him so I decided to look a see what else is becoming of this man.
The most recent article about Rob Ford, indicates that he has not changed much since the last time we heard from him. He is now accusing the Maclean's Newspaper Company of having pedophilic tendencies. There was no evidence against the reporter for taking any pictures of Ford's kids. The mayor is continuing to create a bigger hole into his career with all these crazy accusations.

  8. I choose to look at the current status of social networking regarding privacy.
Close to 1 in 4 social media users have posted something that they have later regretted. More than a third of users say they have seen something inappropriate. Alarming? Possibly. But when it comes to social networking, only 16 percent of Facebook users check their privacy settings every month and only 12 percent change them every month. Google+ user statistics are much more staggering. 30 percent say they have never even checked their privacy setting ever. All in all about 40 percent of social media users don't even know how to use the privacy settings for the things they post.
